A broken form. An update you are putting off. A site that needs regular attention. Get practical fixes and ongoing WordPress care, with the work, checks and responsibilities agreed before anything changes.
WordPress & PHP are my primary professional experience. Elementor, ACF and WooCommerce are natural starting points. Other stacks need a technical-fit review.
Know what is covered. Know what needs a separate plan.
These are workstreams we can include, not automatic entitlements. Your written scope names the tasks, limits and checks.
WORKSTREAMAGREED TASKS & CHECKSSCOPE SEPARATELY UNLESS INCLUDED
01
Website fixes & layout repairs
Investigate a reproducible issue such as a broken link, JavaScript error or mobile layout. Define the affected pages and acceptance checks before changing them. Pre-existing faults and unfamiliar custom code are reviewed rather than assumed to fit a routine maintenance allowance.
Extra scopingLarge rebuilds, unfamiliar custom code and additional faults discovered during review.
02
WordPress & plugin updates
Review WordPress, theme and plugin updates, compatibility and licence availability. Take an appropriate backup and test higher-risk changes on protected staging where available. Urgent security fixes are prioritised separately instead of automatically waiting for a monthly visit.
Extra scopingReplacement plugins, paid licences and major compatibility remediation.
03
Backups & recovery readiness
Agree files-plus-database coverage, storage, retention, access and who handles recovery. Check scheduled jobs and available copies; a successful backup notification is not a proven restore. A restoration exercise, its environment and workflow checks must be explicitly included.
Extra scopingA restoration exercise, emergency recovery or a new backup-storage setup.
04
Forms & important user journeys
Check the agreed contact, login, search or checkout flow after relevant changes. A form success message does not establish inbox delivery. Tests use controlled data; real messages, orders, payments and production integrations are exercised only with approval.
Extra scopingNew integrations, provider-account changes and approved live transaction tests.
05
Measured performance improvements
Review representative pages for oversized images, unnecessary scripts, plugin overhead and unsuitable caching. Compare agreed changes under similar test conditions. Hosting and third-party services affect results, so a perfect speed score or search ranking is not promised.
Extra scopingHosting changes, substantial code rewrites and ongoing SEO campaigns.
06
Content changes & clear reporting
An agreed allowance can cover supplied text, images and small page edits. Record completed work, checks, unresolved issues and recommendations in a plain-English change summary. New features, copywriting, redesigns and large content jobs are separate unless listed.
Extra scopingCopywriting, new page designs, new features and large content batches.
Monitoring, content allowances and recovery exercises are included only when listed. No hidden assumption of unrestricted development.
CAREFUL CHANGES, NOT BLIND UPDATES
Before changing the site, protect what matters.
A backup, a test copy and a live website have different jobs. Treat them that way—especially when customers are placing orders.
Staging needs real isolation. Use access controls, not only noindex. Test gateways and blocked real email, webhooks and scheduled jobs must be checked, not assumed.
PLANNING EXAMPLEKeep a way back. Protect what is new.

≠
A backup is not a proven restore.
A matched set, accessible storage and a separately agreed restoration test.
Protected stagingControlled data. Real side effects blocked.
Reviewed changes only
Live websitePreserve new orders & customer records.
No blind database swap. An older staging copy or backup can overwrite newer live data.
A copy is not a recovery test
Agree a matching files-and-database backup, storage, retention and recovery owner. A successful job notification does not prove restoration. A restore exercise needs its own environment and workflow checks.
Keep the live store current
WooCommerce maintenance needs extension, checkout and account checks. Plan release and rollback around current orders and customer data. Never blindly replace the live database with an older staging copy.
Approve the end-to-end test
Use controlled data first. Agree recipients and timing before real-email testing or live orders, payments and integrations. A form success message is not proof of inbox delivery.
Complex malware incidents may need your host or a specialist incident-response provider. Any website repair work is separately scoped.
FROM THE FIRST MESSAGE TO THE CHANGE NOTE
A process you can follow. In plain English.
Work directly with the developer making the changes. Questions, approvals and handover can all happen in writing.
01
Report what is happening
Share the URL, symptoms, business impact and recent changes. A public page can start the review; it cannot prove private backups, server health or the root cause.
02
Agree the investigation and scope
Confirm access, diagnosis work, affected pages and acceptance checks. If the cause is unclear, agree the investigation first rather than inventing a fixed repair quote.
03
Change with a way back
Review backups and dependencies, use protected staging where appropriate and make the agreed change. Store orders and new enquiries must be preserved during release or rollback.
04
Verify and hand over
Recheck the affected journeys and explain what changed, what was tested and what remains. Separate an initial response target from the estimate to complete a repair.
SAMPLE HANDOVER NOTE
A useful change summary. Not just “done”.
Illustrative task: repair a mobile enquiry button. This is a fictional report, not completed client work.
Change
Adjusted the button spacing in the agreed mobile template.
Checked
Link target, keyboard focus and the agreed narrow-screen layouts.
Not tested
Inbox delivery, payments and other page templates. No customer emails sent.
Next step
Review other affected pages separately if the same issue appears there.
A USEFUL PLACE TO START
Recognise the symptom? Read before you change.
Published troubleshooting guides, not proof of client repair results. Use them to understand the issue or prepare a clearer enquiry.
Small fixes can be quoted individually; ongoing maintenance can be monthly. Included tasks, support hours, response targets and extra-work rates are agreed in the written scope.
A response target is not a resolution promise. Diagnosis, access and provider dependencies affect completion. Hosting, licences and other subscriptions are separate unless listed.
THE PRACTICAL QUESTIONS
Clear expectations. Before we start.
What care includes, how an existing site is reviewed and where extra work needs a separate agreement.
An agreed scope can cover updates, backups, key-function checks, bug fixes, supplied content edits and reporting. The platform, integrations and business risks determine the list. Monitoring, repair allowances and recovery testing are only included when specified; maintenance does not mean unrestricted development.
Can you fix a site you did not build?
Yes, after reviewing the platform, code access, hosting and the issue. Existing WordPress, Elementor and WooCommerce sites are a natural starting point. Unsupported plugins, missing licences, serious pre-existing faults and complex custom applications may need separate remediation or a technical-fit review.
Can I hire you for one small fix?
Yes. You do not need a monthly plan for a one-off issue. Send the URL, what happens and what should happen instead. We agree the investigation and repair scope before work begins; a screenshot or public URL alone may not be enough to identify the cause.
Do you support WordPress maintenance?
Yes. WordPress and PHP are my primary professional experience, including Elementor, ACF and WooCommerce. We can scope update checks, plugin conflicts, forms, layout repairs and performance work. Backups, licences, staging access and third-party dependencies are reviewed at the start.
Does a monthly plan include hosting, content edits or emergency recovery?
Only when included in the written scope. Confirm third-party subscriptions, content allowances, support hours and recovery work separately. A response target is not a guaranteed resolution time.
How much does website maintenance cost?
One-off tasks and monthly care are quoted after a review. Platform complexity, store features, existing faults, backup needs, edit allowances and support expectations affect the price. Hosting, premium licences and external services remain separate unless listed. There is no published one-price package for every website.
Will updates affect my live WooCommerce orders?
Store work needs a specific plan. We test the agreed update set and important store journeys, then apply changes without blindly replacing the live database. An older staging copy or backup can overwrite newer orders and customers, so deployment and recovery must account for current production data.
Are backups the same as a tested recovery plan?
No. A typical WordPress restoration needs both files and database. Scheduled jobs, retained copies and readable archives are useful checks, but they do not prove a complete site restore. Restoration testing must have an agreed environment, workflow checks and recorded result.
Do you provide round-the-clock emergency support?
This is direct freelance support, not a continuously staffed helpdesk. Working hours, communication channels and response targets are agreed in writing. Completion depends on the diagnosis, access and provider dependencies. A suspected compromise or serious outage may require your host or a specialist incident-response provider.
Will maintenance make my website secure, faster or rank higher?
Updates, careful changes and relevant performance work can reduce avoidable problems, but no site is immune to incidents. Hosting, software, content and external services affect the outcome. Security, uptime, speed scores and rankings are not guaranteed; ongoing SEO campaigns and extensive recovery work need their own scope.
